Inspiring Future Physicists at the Light Up Sir Harold Hillier Gardens Event

Staff and students from the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Cornerstone Photonics Innovation Centre (C-PIC) had the opportunity to ignite the imaginations of future physicists during the Christmas light art trail at the Light Up Sir Harold Hillier Gardens at Christmas event on 27th, 28th, and 30th November 2024.

The Light Up event, an annual light art trail held at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey, Hampshire, transformed the 180-acre arboretum into a festive wonderland. It featured immersive light installations and soundscapes created by leading artists and designers.

In collaboration with the University of Southampton‘s photonics innovation centre, CORNERSTONE, the event highlighted the scientific principles underpinning the artistic displays. University staff and students engaged with visitors, explaining the physics and optical engineering behind the installations. This partnership aimed to inspire young attendees to consider careers in science and technology.

Dr Pearl John, Public Engagement Leader in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton, reflected on the significance of this collaboration: “To have scientists at art events such as Light Up Trails is important to us. We want to engage with young people who are yet to even recognise the science in what they’re seeing.”

The event offered visitors a captivating and educational experience, illustrating the intersection of art and science. By showcasing the technology behind the displays, it deepened appreciation for both the artistic and scientific aspects of the installations.
