Inspiring Future Physicists at Light Up Trails

Staff and students from the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Cornerstone Photonics Innovation Centre (C-PIC) helped spark curiosity in future scientists by science busking at Light Up Trails, an interactive art exhibition held at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Romsey, Hampshire, on 27, 28, and 30 November 2024.

Light Up Trails transformed the 180-acre arboretum into a festive wonderland, featuring immersive light displays and soundscapes created by leading artists and designers. Throughout the event, University staff and students shared the physics and scientific principles behind the exhibits, helping visitors discover how photonics and optics make such experiences possible. The partnership aimed to inspire young people to explore opportunities in these fields.

Dr Pearl John, Public Engagement Leader in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton, reflected on the importance of the collaboration:

“To have scientists at art events such as Light Up Trails is important to us. We want to engage with young people who are yet to even recognise the science in what they’re seeing.”

The event provided a unique blend of creativity and discovery, highlighting the connections between scientific innovation and artistic expression. By revealing the technology behind the displays, it encouraged visitors to appreciate both the imagination and expertise that brought the experience to life.
